Kanchalika created Malako in 2017 after working in the marketing sector for many years.

Being originally from Thailand, Kanchalika is passionate about giving back to the Thai local community.

Hi Kanchalika,

When did you realise that you wanted to pursue a career in skincare?

It all started when I moved to the UK almost 20 years ago. I started feeling a bit stressed at work and in life and my skin suffered the consequences. I developed an ezcema and my skin became very sensitive and inflamed, and I was also diagnosed with keratosis pilaris, a condition where the skin becomes rough and bumpy.

To treat them both, I had to rely on steroid creams, which was not ideal. So I decided to research natural alternatives to manage my skin conditions.

This journey not only made me understand and appreciate the huge benefits that natural ingredients have for the skin, but it also made me fall in love with the story of the people behind these ingredients – the growers and farmers. Their stories inspired me to create MALAKO skincare the way it is now, with natural products that aren’t just skin deep but also have a positive impact on the community and our planet.

What do you think you would be doing today if you had not started Malako?

I would be probably working in a plantation or a farm somewhere.

Nature has always fascinated me and it would be a dream to grow natural resources and plants for a living.

What would you say are the challenges faced by skincare brands nowadays?

I wouldn’t consider being in the skincare market challenging in general. I would say that the challenge is to be a self-funded entrepreneur in these times. 2020 has been extremely challenging for everyone and it keeps pushing us to react and to think outside the box without losing your identity.

"every candle is carefully and lovingly handmade using only natural materials from the Northern nature."

What does a normal day in the studio look like?

My routine starts with a long shower, a tea and a BIG breakfast with my husband.

Then I like to do a bit of gardening. Getting connected to nature before starting my workday gets me in the right frame of mind for the day. As I work from home, I can finish my gardening and plant watering and still be at my desk by 9!

Then, I make my to do list and go through each task.

As I work by myself, it is extremely important for me not to forget to use any extra time to connect with my family & friends.

Could you tell us a little bit more about your creative process when it comes to designing and crafting your products?

Sometimes the aroma and other times the visual look of a product comes first, but both are equally important to me. My biggest inspiration is our nature.

We understand that each product is unique - how long does it take you, on average, to make a candle?

The candle making process is different for each product, but for example the Naturella candle from the beginning to the finished product takes 8 hours to make.

What are your favourite materials to work with?

Essential oils!

What do you hope to communicate to the person who purchases one of your products

That every candle is carefully and lovingly handmade using only natural materials from the Northern nature.

A sustainable lifestyle is important to us and to our customers. Could you tell us how you practise sustainability as an independent business?

Sustainability is one of our most important intentions. We take this into mind in each product and production process.

In our products we only use natural and renewable materials. We stay away from plastic. Even our new skincare products are filled into glass bottles.

Do you have any plans for the near future to increase your sustainability even further?

I believe that a huge problem in the world is disposable plastic bottles in cosmetics. We are developing some new products and packaging types to fix this problem.

If you could chose one of your products to keep with you forever, what would it be?
