Pelican Vintage illustration

Pelican Vintage illustration is another one of our amazing James Audubon designs. Aububon takes pride in his mastery of natural portraits, in particular birds. James was an American ornithologist whom was born in Les Cayes in the French colony of Saint Domingue.

One of the most interesting parts of this painting is the overpowering size of the pelican, its dominating presence creates an incredible atmosphere. James Aubodon took a lot of pride in powerful water birds. The pelican is one of the largest water birds in existence. A pelicans wingspan can grow up to 3.5 m and can weigh up too 15 kg. This particular pelican is a white American pelican, one of eight species.

The Pelican was also associated with ancient Egypt and the afterlife. Artwork involving the pelican was found on the walls of tombs. The pelican was a symbol of protection against snakes
